. if a crisis can be averted. if democrats and republicans can come to an agreement on the big fight that has been frankly smothering american politics for weeks now. president obama announced earlier today that he wants to see a deal done by tomorrow on the big debt ceiling fight that has consumed every bit of oxygen in d.c. for the last few months. the president saying tonight that congressional leaders are on the clock. they have 24 to 36 hours to get a deal done. as planning a vote that the u.s. government should not default on our debt and shut down comes down to the wire, we are inching close enough to the edge here that two of the world's major credit rating agencies have warned that our national credit rating may be downgraded as a result of this standoff. the day that the u.s. would actually hit the debt ceiling and start going into default and shutting down is august 2. but this does not mean that we have until august 2 before we lose our national credit rating. that could just happen right now. because of the uncertainty and because of how long it is taking to get this done. right

is we have a unique opportunity to do something big. we have a chance to stabilize america's finances for a decade, for 15 years or 20 years. if we're willing to seize the moment. what that would require would be some shared sacrifice and a balanced approach that says we're going to make significant cuts in domestic spending. and i have already said i'm willing to take down domestic spending to the lowest percentage of our overall economy since dwight eisenhower. it also requires cuts in defense spending. and i've said that in addition to the $400 billion that we've already cut from defense spending we're willing to look for hundreds of billions more. it would require us taking on health care spending. and that includes looking at medicare and finding ways that we can stabilize the system so that it is available not just for this generation but for future generations. and it would require revenues. it would require, even as we're asking the person who needs a student loan or the senior citizen or, you know, people -- veterans who are trying to get by on a disability check, even as we'

a democratic president at the table willing to make major changes in the big three, to the tune of $4 trillion across the board, and the republicans won't take the deal. it's rather amazing. why? are they afraid that president obama might do well with independent voters? are they miscalculating the fact that the base would be furious with the president if he were to cave in on the big three? and president obama tonight in my opinion is emerging as the most honest broker maybe washington has seen in a long, long time. he openly states he's willing to put his presidency on the line to bring both sides together to get a deal, and the only way he believes that can be done is if some revenue from the wealthiest americans comes into the treasury. and the republicans won't budge. it's amazing, it really is amazing. president obama is trying to make an honest negotiations at the decade. this is what republicans have wanted for decades. they have a democratic president that's willing to do it and they walk? because of revenue? amazing. for more on tonight's meeting, sam young man. white house correspon

in this country, if we don't meet our bills, do we get into big trouble, or don't we? some people are holding out and saying, this isn't a problem we can slither through this thing. where are you on that? >> no. i think it is a problem. in fact, you know, we have slowly stair stepped our way into this mess and certainly the gop caucus, right on right crime perpetrated there with the different messages and you know, who's on top of who? who's the leading voice today? done nothing more than muddled the debate for a lot of the american people right now. you're seeing it begin to reflect in the polls. beginning to see it reflect amongst some of the other members of the caucus who are just sick and tired of not getting to a point of resolution. so i think that there are very serious people there beginning to step up with the party on both sides, quite frankly, to move the participants to a point where we can actually begin to get something done. i think, chris, there will be a deal done. the question is, right now, what exactly does it look like, and who's prepared to stand before the american people

in three weeks the president continued to press for a big deal to raise the debt ceiling and to reduce the deficit by $4 trillion. >> i am still pushing for us to achieve a big deal. but what i also said to the group is if we can't do the biggest deal possible, then let's still be ambitious. let's still try to at least get a down payment on deficit reduction. we are obviously running out of time. and so what i have sd to the members of congress is that you need over the next 24 to 36 hours to give me some sense of what your plan is to get the debt ceiling raised through whatever mechanisms they can thk about anshow me a plan in terms of what you are doing for deficit and debt reduction. if they show me a serious plan, i'm ready to move. even if it requires some tough decisions on my part. and i'm hopeful that over the nextouple of days we'll se this long jam broken because the american people i think understandably want to see washington do its job. >> charlie: president obama ruled out a 2.4 trillion plan proposed by house republicans. >> my expectation is thayou will probay see the h

heated yesterday between obama and eric cantor. while they bicker, the big three credit rating agencies are warning the aaa bond status could be at risk. the debt ceiling deadline, as you may know, is august 2nd, but the president set tomorrow for the deadline to see if a grand bargain is possible, if not a bare bones bargain. if not, payments to critters, bill payments, you name it, there is not enough income to cover all that. every month we come up $125 billion short. if we cannot borrow to bridge the cap, 40% of the monthly obligations could not be paid, and that could include social security checks due to go out on august 3rd. the stakes we just laid out are monumental, so both sides have to give ground and risk their jobs for the good of the country. what is so hard about that, right? joining me with their insights on conflict resolution are cnn contributor, pete dominic, and family law attorney, mrs. winestein. what does it take for two entrenched parties to agree on a deal that both need? >> well, you know, the obvious is that you take the emotion out of the room and you try to

. they do, however, believe she's no longer in central florida. when she left the jail, you saw the big crowds there. there were people yelling "killer" in that crowd as she got into the suv and left. there is a great deal of emotion still unresolved around this case. we saw a lot of people getting together who were doing something peaceful with those emotions over the weekend. they went to the site where caylee anthony's body was discovered and held a march from that site to the anthony home. all to remember the child whose death started all of this. it was a very solemn occasion. a lot of people walking in the street. at one point it was reported there were cars lined up on the road about a half mile long of people just parking on the roadside going into those woods where her body was discovered to go to that spot and remember that little girl. again, a great deal of emotion. people trying to process all of this on their own. but casey anthony at the moment is still staying out of the public eye even though she has a lot of legal entanglements she will still have to address in the mon

street is worried about washington. late wednesday moody's one of the big three credit rating agencies warning it might have to lower the rating if lawmakers don't come to an agreement on raising the debt ceiling. in the statement it said the action was prompted by the possibility that the debt limit woil not be raised in time to prevent a missed payment on u.s. bonds with a small but rising risk of ashort-lived default. economists say if the aaa rating is lowered it will throw the financial markets into chaos and the cost of borrowing would go up to everything from morlts to car loans. ben bernanke warned. >> i think the worst outcome if we don't raise the limit, at some point we default on debt and that would create as i said before, a huge financial calamity. >> reporter: sources say the president knew about the moody's warning as he headed into wednesday meeting which all sides describe as tense. republican majority leader eric cantor cited the president as saying i have reached my limit. he left saying i'll see you tomorrow. the two sides couldn't even agree about what happened in

of doing something big to change america's unsustainable economic path. what do you think? do that you think that opportunity is lost? >> well, a week is a long time in politics. it can be a lifetime, as you know. i think the big deal, the grand deal, the grand bargain of $4 trillion over four years is dead, it's gone. i think the chances of getting a deal at 2.5 are 2. the middle double deal, very unlikely, because the president does not want to go that high without tax increases and republicans are not going to do it. here's the question that is coming out. and that s. the house republicans are now pushing a very, very tough deal through the house. the -- over on the senate side, the republicans are working to get a version of the mcconnell plan. and the president will accept that as he said in his news conference on friday. but whether the house republicans would accept that or not, it's a big, big question. it seems to me that's the lead horse. that's the lead solution, a version of the mcconnell plan, with throwing in the spending which i think would be a good idea which leaves $1
